Advocacy in Action: June 2023

This week, we discuss consultation on the Auckland Future Development Strategy and the looming deadline for certification for existing Build to Rent assets. Plus, we update our FY2024 engagement tracker, with an incredible 84 stakeholder meetings and 10 submissions since 1 April.

Auckland Future Development Strategy

Our sector’s voice is strongest when we speak together. Today, we’re calling for members to join our member taskforce on Auckland’s Future Development Strategy and help guide our advocacy work.

Consultation will shortly open (6 June) on Auckland Council’s Future Development Strategy. This is the long-term strategic plan for urban growth across Auckland. It will have a notable effect on development patterns across Auckland, restricting new greenfield developments and helping shape the future of our built environment.

Here at Property Council, we are concerned about the potential impact on housing supply and affordability.

Existing Build to Rent – deadline for certification

Existing Build to Rent assets have a deadline of 1 July 2023, to apply for registration with Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in order to claim deductions for interest.

The new interest rules apply retrospectively from 1 October 2021 and existing build to rent developments have until 1 July 2023 to apply for registration. Where an owner owns multiple build to rent developments, a separate application must be made for each one that qualifies. The exclusion will apply to registered new build-to-rent land (developments built on or after 1 July 2023) from the date of application for registration.
