Fostering the Next Generation

The last half of 2018 has seen National Council working with the advocacy team on several issues that have far-reaching impacts for our membership.
One of the top priorities has been our consultation with the Tax Working Group, a project that will continue into the New Year as we oppose the proposed capital gains tax. While Property Council supports the concept of treating all capital income fairly, we do not think that the benefits from generally extending the taxation of capital income, would outweigh the costs and negative consequences.
I have also been honoured to celebrate Property Council’s regional Property People Awards in the branches, an experience that has given me tremendous hope for the future of our industry. While these events are a great excuse to enjoy a night out, the regional awards programme has a much greater purpose; to foster the next generation.
Property Council’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee is also working in this space, and I am looking forward to witnessing one of the first initiatives to come from this Committee when the Emerging Leaders Programme launches in the New Year.
The programme aims to enable mentors to pass on their knowledge to those at the beginning of their property career. Long-term, we envisage this programme growing to be a respected and sought-after mentorship exchange, and I hope to see many talented people taking up the opportunity to be involved.
Finally, I would like to offer Leonie a warm welcome to the position of Chief Executive. National Council are looking forward to working closely with her to develop a constructive and inclusive long-term strategy for the organisation as we enter this new era of leadership.
In the meantime, have a safe and happy summer break.
