Building (Overseas Building Products Standards and Certification Schemes) Amendment Bill introduced to Parliament

Two weeks ago, the Building (Overseas Building Products, Standards and Certification Schemes) Amendment Bill was introduced to Parliament. The Bill introduces changes to the Building Act which will reduce barriers for using quality overseas building products in New Zealand. Please click here to read the Bill.

Property Council completed a submission during MBIE’s early engagement with industry back in May this year. We support the proposal to accept more overseas standards from overseas standards organisations and standards certification schemes as we believe this will enhance competition and innovation in New Zealand’s market, whilst reducing red tape.

The first reading of the Bill has been set down for later this month, after which it will be referred to the select committee. We will keep our members up to date as this Bill progresses. If you are interested in contributing to Property Council’s future submissions, please get in touch with Sandamali: sandamali@propertynz.co.nz

The Property Conference

This week, we held The Property Conference 2024 in Wellington. The Welcome Function was an opportunity to not only for members to connect with one another, but also with Members of Parliament. With 14 Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum in attendance, we used the opportunity to launch our Property Impact Report

New Taskforce to Engage with Auckland Council on their Unitary Plan Natural Hazards Plan Changes

The Property Council recently met with Auckland Council to discuss how our members can participate in pre-engagement on their Unitary Plan Natural Hazards Plan Changes. This will assess and determine the levels of risk that are tolerable for development in relation to natural hazards (e.g. flooding and landslides).

This has implications for what developments can proceed and where, plus possible requirements for hazard mitigation measures etc. To ensure the Council understands our members’ perspectives, we urge you to get involved by joining our Auckland Unitary Plan Natural Hazards Plan Changes Taskforce.

A meeting with the Taskforce and council will be organised for September 2024. There may be subsequent meetings (to be confirmed).

If you (or anyone in your organisation) are interested in joining this Taskforce, or have any questions, please contact Terry Jones – Senior Advocacy Advisor (terry@properynz.co.nz).
