International Women’s Day: five questions with Lizzi Whaley

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I’m Lizzi Whaley, CEO of Spaceworks Interior Architecture. I’ve spent the past 20 years leading a business that transforms workplace interiors to drive business success. I’m passionate about people—how they use space, how space makes them feel, and how design influences behaviour. The right environment changes everything.

Which women inspire you the most?

The women who push boundaries, challenge the status quo, and create space for others to rise. Those making waves in business and the quiet changemakers behind the scenes—anyone who lifts as they climb. Women like Theresa Gattung, Cecilia Robinson, Frances Valintine, and Anna Zeil inspire me with their leadership, innovation, and impact.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #AccelerateAction—what does this look like to you?

It’s about moving beyond talk and into action. Too often, things stay on the to-do list or get stuck in discussions about how to frame them ‘correctly.’ Real change happens when we take action—ensuring women are at the decision-making table, closing the gender pay gap, and designing workplaces that genuinely support diverse needs. Action fast-tracks progress for everyone.

What do you think is the key to building a workplace where women thrive?

Flexibility, opportunity, and a culture where women are heard, seen, and valued. It’s about creating an environment where women don’t just participate—they thrive. Spaceworks is 80% women, run by women, and that’s because when given the right space to succeed, they do—and so does the business. Policies help, but culture is what truly makes the difference.

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

Stop overthinking and get tested for ADHD earlier—it’ll make life make more sense. Also, you don’t need all the answers to take the first step or make an impact. Trust your instincts, learn from every challenge, and don’t wait for permission—just go for it.
