It is now easier to install roof-mounted solar panel arrays. The new building consent exemptions allow roof-mounted solar arrays to be installed without a building consent, if conditions are met.
These exemptions apply to new and existing residential and non-residential buildings to support greater uptake of roof-mounted solar in Aotearoa New Zealand. The changes also remove the setback distance requirements for buildings under 10 square metres and reduce the setback for single-storey standalones to a minimum of 1 metre for buildings 10 to 30 square metres.
As strong advocates for sustainable, future-focused cities, Property Council welcomes this change as it will help make the building system more efficient and enables our members to more easily invest in renewable energy solutions that lower emissions, reduce operating costs, and support resilient urban growth.
