I Belong in Property: Helen O'Sullivan

Find out why Helen O'Sullivan, CEO of Crockers Property Group, belongs in property as we continue the #ibelonginproperty series, celebrating the people shaping New Zealand's cities.

My current role is…

CEO of Crockers Property Group

The best part about my job is…

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata – it is people, it is people, it is people.

Property is…

All about people.  We deal in homes and communities and the people who live in them, invest in them, count on them, buy them and sell them, create them – so at the end of the day, it’s all about people.

I choose to work in property because…

I get to combine my love of places, people and facts all in one great bundle.  And there’s lots of pretty pictures, and no end of data.  What more could you ask for in life?

My three workday essentials are…

A phone, wifi, and a sense of humour.

My typical day at work…

Is never typical.  Usually starts with me opening up a piece of work which simply must get done today, and getting to it around 5:30 pm.

My most valuable skill…

Is one I had to learn, and still have to kick myself periodically to remind myself to exercise it – is the ability to listen.

My biggest career lesson…

Was learning that if someone opens a door for you, walk through it.  (I’m speaking metaphorically here, as well as in terms of actual doors being opened by actual people, of course).

My childhood dream…

Was to be an astronaut.  I’ve settled for the earth, cos I couldn’t get to the moon.  Well, I haven’t made it yet.  There’s still time.  Hurry up, Richard Branson!

My biggest inspiration…

Was being told, as a very young woman, to SIT AT THE TABLE.  Not the dinner table, the board table.  The message was – you’re not here to make the tea, you’re here because you have something to contribute to the challenge at hand. Take your place, know your worth, lean in.

My downtime is spent…

Reading, sailing, car racing.

The one piece of advice I’d give to someone considering property as a career…

There’s something in this industry for almost everyone, whoever you are and wherever you are from, and it’s fundamental to our economy, our society, our community.  Pin your ears back and go for it. Work hard. And drink the good stuff now.
