Four months after consultation closed on the Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Bill, the Select Committee is due to report back on 16 June 2026. The report will indicate whether the committee supports the Bill as drafted or recommends changes in response to submissions.
Property Council participated in both the written and oral submission process, drawing on member feedback. We support the proposed regime, which focuses on areas of greatest risk and prioritises the protection of life through targeted strengthening of vulnerable buildings.
The Bill is expected to progress before the election. If enacted, several provisions take effect immediately following Royal Assent — including the removal of Auckland from the earthquake-prone buildings regime.
One important piece of work remains to be done beyond the Bill itself: the development of the earthquake-prone building methodology. Property Council has sought involvement in this work and will participate in public consultation, expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Our aim is to ensure the new regime is practical and workable for the sector.
