Tanya Syddall returns to the University of Otago

Tanya Syddall has been appointed as Chief Property and Development Officer at the University of Otago. Tanya returns to Otago with extensive experience both within the university and across the wider sector, along with strong sector-wide connections. She will lead the university’s property and campus development agenda, including the Places Enabler plan.

Carmen Boyden has been promoted to Commercial Manager, and Emily Johnston has stepped up into the role of Property Manager at Tinline.

Carmen’s ability to build strong relationships and bring people together has made a significant contribution to our business. Her commercial mindset, commitment to continuous learning, and ability to maximise opportunities makes this promotion well deserved.

Christchurch City Council appoints new Chief Executive

Christchurch City Council Interim Chief Executive Bede Carran has been appointed to the permanent role. Mr Carran was previously the Chief Executive of Waimate District Council from 2014 to 2016 and Tīmaru District Council from 2016 to 2023.

He joined Christchurch City Council as its General Manager Finance, Risk and Performance/Chief Financial Officer in 2024 and was appointed Interim Chief Executive following the departure of Mary Richardson in April 2026.

Mr Carran will officially take up the role on Wednesday 12 August for a term of four years.
