The results from the latest BRANZ survey into the trends and perceptions around the uptake of mass engineered wood products (EWP) shows a remarkable shift in New Zealand’s building industry towards the adoption of mass timber. The survey is part of a biennial series starting in 2019 and targets a broad spectrum of professionals, including manufacturers, builders, architects, and engineers.
This year’s survey results highlight a significant advance in both the awareness and application of mass timber, driven by its environmental benefits and performance capabilities. They also reveal an increased understanding and integration of engineered wood products (EWPs) in construction projects across the country.
Over half of those surveyed observed increases in the use of EWPs in construction over the past three years. With architects leading the charge, the industry is seeing a transformation toward more sustainable and innovative building practices.
Key insights indicate the evolving perception of EWPs including their environmental advantages and the increasing cost competitiveness of certain products. The survey reports an increase in detailed knowledge among professionals, translating into more precise and efficient use of mass timber in a range of projects.
Comparing data with the 2022 survey, there is a noticeable growth in the adoption of standardised design methods and a growing appreciation of mass timber’s role in reducing construction’s carbon footprint. This is in line with global trends and local regulatory shifts towards greener building materials.
To continue this positive trend, BRANZ recommends further development of economic data on EWPs, expansion of educational efforts, and a broader dissemination of case studies that demonstrate mass timber’s benefits. These steps are crucial for empowering more industry players to make informed decisions about incorporating mass timber into their projects.
With one more survey planned for 2026, BRANZ remains committed to supporting the industry’s transition to a more sustainable future, highlighting the integral role of mass timber in New Zealand’s building sector.
