The Central region’s property community was out in force at the 2024 Central Property People Awards on Thursday 24 October, with over 280 guests gathering to celebrate the people behind some of the region’s most exciting projects.

Rider Levett Bucknall Young Achiever of the Year

In just 11 years, Ryan has risen from apprentice to Senior Leader and Construction Manager at Fosters BOP Ltd, becoming a shareholder in 2023. Judges praised his rapid career growth and impressive contributions to the business. His philosophy of “making tomorrow better” shines through his commitment to mentoring, innovation, and sustainable practices. Ryan embodies Fosters’ vision of building thriving communities, and his leadership continues to drive excellence across the industry.

Beca Women in Property Award

With over 25 years of international experience in transportation engineering, Judith has made significant contributions to both the public and private sectors. Since joining CKL’s senior leadership team in 2018, she has led strategic projects focused on people and culture, while being a strong advocate for women in property. The judges commended Judith for her depth of expertise, leadership, and her dedication to mentoring others. Known as the “go-to person” in Waikato, she has made a lasting impact on the industry.

Chow:Hill Urban Design Award

Completed in 2023, this 3.5-kilometer pathway along Mount Maunganui’s coast is a remarkable blend of cultural sensitivity, environmental stewardship, and inclusive design. Judges praised the team’s ability to navigate complexity with a “light touch,” enhancing the natural dune environment while creating an accessible community space. This project sets a new benchmark for coastal pathways in New Zealand, making a subtle yet profound impact on Tauranga’s urban landscape.

Veros Best Team Award

The University of Waikato’s new cultural gateway, The Pā, is a testament to innovation, collaboration, and cultural respect. The team navigated a complex web of stakeholders with clear communication and adaptability, even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Judges commended their strong leadership and teamwork, which ensured this project not only met its functional goals but also became a landmark for the community. The Pā sets a new standard, combining sustainability, vision, and cultural significance.

CKL Property Professional of the Year Award

With over 17 years in the construction sector, Miko has made a significant impact on the property industry across both residential and commercial projects. Since joining RDT in 2019, she has quickly risen to Associate, leading the Hamilton team with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. Judges praised her leadership in iwi partnerships and sustainability initiatives, calling her a “future leader” with a lasting impact on the industry.

Boffa Miskell Excellence in Sustainability Award

The Fosters Team for Metlifecare Somervale Village Redevelopment Stage 1
This pioneering project set out to construct a mass timber building with a 7 Homestar Built rating, one of the first in the Bay of Plenty, while raising awareness of sustainable building practices. The team exceeded their goal, diverting over 80% of waste from the 232 tonnes generated. Judges praised their innovation and commitment to education, using the project as a tool for broader industry impact.

Fosters Outstanding Leadership Award

A true leader in the Bay of Plenty, Buddy has spent decades championing Māori advocacy, unity, and partnerships across Aotearoa. His leadership is deeply rooted in his identity and heritage, driving his commitment to cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, and economic development. Buddy’s promotion of co-governance models has created equitable decision-making in property development, benefiting both Māori and Pākehā. With boundless energy and a passion for positive change, Buddy has set a benchmark for leadership in the property industry.

Hawkins Waikato Long Service Award

Doug Saunders is a pillar of the Waikato property industry, with decades of service as a Registered Valuer across Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, and Huntly. Specialising in commercial and industrial property valuation, Doug has also contributed to rural and residential projects. He has worked on major initiatives, including asset valuation, environmental impact studies, and feasibility projects, benefiting local authorities, tertiary institutions, and the mining industry.
Doug joined TelferYoung in 1986, became a partner in 1989, and co-directed the firm with Roger Gordon. He continues to serve the property industry as Director of CBRE Valuation and Advisory Services. Beyond his professional contributions, Doug has been a leader in his community, serving on school boards, coaching hockey, and chairing the Waikato Farmers Trust Property Committee.

Hawkins Bay of Plenty Long Service Award

At 72, Bill Holland remains a dynamic force in the Bay of Plenty legal and philanthropic communities. A consultant at Holland Beckett, the firm founded by his father, Bill specialised in trust law and property transactions, becoming a partner for 40 years. Under his leadership, Holland Beckett grew into one of the region’s largest firms.
Beyond his legal expertise, Bill’s dedication to the community has earned him multiple honours, including being made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2024. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Acorn Foundation, encouraging private philanthropy, and serving as its chair for eight years. Bill’s contributions to numerous local organisations, including TECT, Rotary, and Priority One, make him a cherished leader who inspires others to contribute to lasting change.

Harkness Henry Judges’ Choice Award

Over the past decade, this team has transformed 60 hectares of farmland into one of New Zealand’s most dynamic industrial parks. With 24 high-quality developments, Te Rapa Gateway has attracted top companies like Harvey Norman, DHL, and Tesla, boosting the region’s economy.
Their success is built on collaboration, innovation, and a shared 20-year vision for industrial excellence in Waikato.
Judges praised the team for delivering a complex, large-scale development and significantly transforming Hamilton’s employment landscape through strong relationships and teamwork.
