Government announces development of new self-certification scheme

For many years now, Property Council has called for a self-certification scheme to help speed up the building consent process.

It is very exciting to see the Government is doing just that as it is looking to develop a new opt-in self-certification scheme for low-risk residential building work undertaken by qualified building professionals and accredited building companies.

These proposed changes aim to reduce the burden on building consent authorities and shift accountability to those who are doing the work, improving the efficiency of the building consent system and reducing costs.

Overall, this is a huge win for our members, who know all too well about the inefficiencies of the current building consent system. We look forward to seeing how this workstream progresses and will be submitting to the Government’s proposal as well as keeping our members informed as it plays out.
