Emerging Leaders Programme builds bonds in the industry

As part of our ongoing spotlight on the next generation of industry leaders, we spoke with a current participant in Property Council New Zealand’s Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP) to explore how the programme is shaping the skills, confidence, and career pathways of emerging talent in the property sector.

In this interview, Holly Mace, Investment Analyst at Goodman, reflects on her early experiences in the industry, the value of mentorship, and the lessons that have had the greatest impact on her leadership journey so far.

Meet Holly Mace

Holly Mace is an Investment Analyst at Goodman, focused on financial and property analysis and reporting under GMT’s new funds management business. Prior to this role she was in the Sustainability team at Goodman for three years, focusing on sustainable development, emissions reduction, climate resilience and biodiversity initiatives. Having graduated from Waipapa Taumata Rau (The University of Auckland) mid 2023, most of her time in the industry has been in conjunction with completing her Bachelor of Property & Bachelor of Commerce.

How did you first find your way into the property industry?

“The Bachelor of Property degree at The University of Auckland, which I studied alongside a Bachelor of Commerce, offered many valuable industry networking and scholarship opportunities. My first job in the property industry was with Dilworth Trust Board after attending one of these networking events, followed by the beginning of my journey with Goodman through the Goodman Scholarship. With these opportunities, I worked part-time in the property industry for two and a half years before graduating.”

What motivated you to apply for the Property Council’s Emerging Leaders Programme?

“I applied to the ELP to develop as a leader in the property industry. My experience co-creating a women’s mentoring programme at university highlighted the immense value of mentorship, so I wanted to capitalise on this mentoring opportunity tailored to my growth and development with aspirations to be a leader in the property industry.”

What has been the most valuable or eye-opening part of the programme so far?

“The one-on-one mentorship has been incredibly valuable, providing tailored guidance on leadership challenges and career progression – driven by what you want out of these sessions. The in-person training day, with workshops on leadership communication styles and real-world scenarios, was also a key highlight, offering practical insights alongside peers facing similar challenges.”

How has ELP helped you grow or challenged your thinking as a leader?

“Through discussions with my mentor, I’ve learned to consider different solutions and grow in confidence. This has helped me become more open-minded and adaptable in my leadership.”

Have there been any standout moments, people, or lessons that have stayed with you?

While everyone has a preferred style of communication, the ability to adapt based on the person or team you’re interacting with as a leader is crucial. The conversations I’ve had with my mentor about vulnerability in leadership have also been impactful, reminding me to be authentic and intentional in how I lead – “when you fail to intentionally become something, you unintentionally become anything.”

What impact has being part of ELP had on you or your career so far?

ELP helped me confidently prepare for and participate in panel discussions and public speaking events that initially appeared daunting. My mentor supported me by providing feedback, encouragement, and opportunities for reflection, which has given me the confidence to take on more opportunities like this.

Would you recommend the programme to others in the industry? If so, why, and who do you think would benefit most?

I highly recommend the ELP to those early in their careers or aspiring to leadership roles in the property industry. It offers structured mentorship, leadership development, and the opportunity to connect with industry peers, making it ideal for anyone looking to grow their leadership skills and gain new perspectives.

Holly’s experience highlights the transformational impact of structured mentorship, practical leadership development, and peer connection — all core pillars of the Emerging Leaders Programme.

As the property sector continues to evolve, investing in people who can lead with confidence, empathy, and adaptability has never been more important. Stories like hers demonstrate the real value of programmes that nurture capability early and foster long-term industry leadership.
