Election day fast approaching – have your say on behalf of your business

The New Zealand local elections are fast approaching, with voting closing on 11 October. We encourage all Property Council members to take this opportunity to have their say in shaping the future of our cities and regions.

If your business pays rates in an electorate different from your residential address, you may be entitled to vote in that area as a non-resident ratepayer. To find out more about whether your business is eligible to vote check out our article here. While enrolment for the non-resident ratepayer roll closed on 1 August, there is still a way to cast your vote.

Haven’t enrolled? You may still be able to vote

If you missed the enrolment deadline, you can still participate by requesting a special voting paper. This process is designed for eligible voters who, for various reasons, are not listed on the main electoral roll but still qualify to vote.

To vote via special vote, you must:

  • Have been eligible for the non-resident ratepayer roll (e.g. pay rates in a different electorate from where you live).
  • Contact the council where your business is located to request a special vote.
  • Submit your completed special voting paper before 11 October.

Each council manages its own process for issuing and receiving special votes, so we recommend getting in touch as soon as possible to ensure you receive your papers in time.

A Final Reminder

This is a unique opportunity for business owners and ratepayers to engage in local decision-making beyond their home electorate. Voting ensures our sector is represented at the decision-making table, helping to drive better outcomes for development, investment and long-term growth across New Zealand. For more insight into the issues that impact local decision-making in the property sector, check out our local governance briefing paper. Whether you’ve already enrolled or need to request a special vote, every voice counts in shaping communities where business and people can thrive.

heck out Property Council’s Local Governance Briefing Paper, which outlines key challenges and sector-informed solutions to support thriving, well-planned communities. It’s a useful resource to inform your thinking as we head to the polls.
