Christchurch City Council named one-stop shop for supermarket consenting

Christchurch City Council has been chosen as the single national consenting authority for large-scale supermarket developments.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis says the new service is the latest step in the Government’s plans to make New Zealand a more attractive destination for new supermarkets.

“More supermarkets equals more competition equals lower prices.”

The initiative aims to address inconsistent, costly, and delayed grocery building consents by centralising the process to provide a more predictable and efficient pathway for new supermarket entrants outside the major regulated retailers.
