Government announces new Flexible Fund for Social Housing
The Government is streamlining social housing funding by creating one new ‘Flexible Fund’, combining what used to be many separate funding pots into something simpler and more responsive. Budget 2025 earmarked $41 million operating costs over four years and $250 million capital over the next ten years for this fund. The Government estimates this should be enough to deliver up to 650-900 additional social homes or affordable rentals starting from 1 July 2027.
The Flexible Fund is designed to give regions more say. There will also be a greater focus on housing typology needed as greater demand exists for one-bedroom homes. The Government is working with 5 key community housing providers to allocate funding for housing delivery where housing need and emergency housing usage is highest. The five key Community Housing Providers to partner with Government are Community of Refuge Trust Community Housing, Salvation Army, Emerge Aotearoa, Te Āhuru Mōwai and Accessible Properties NZ. For more information, read the Government’s announcement here.
