Christchurch, New Zealand: Nearly 300 guests gathered at the highly anticipated South Island Property People Awards this evening to celebrate the outstanding contributions of industry leaders shaping the future of the South Island’s built environment. In a night full of recognition and reflection, Michael Connolly of Colliers took centre stage, earning both the prestigious GHD Property Professional of the Year Award and the coveted Property Council Supreme Excellence Award.

With a career spanning over four decades, Connolly’s influence on the property sector has been profound. The judging panel commended Connolly’s unparalleled impact:

Te Matatiki Toi Ora – Arts Centre Team wins Best Team Award
Another major highlight was the Te Matatiki Toi Ora – Arts Centre Team, who were awarded the Best Team Award. Consisting of Dave Pearson Architects, Heritage New Zealand, Holmes NZ LP, Leighs Construction, RCP, Rhodes and Associates, The Arts Centre Trust, and Warren and Mahoney, the team was praised for their exceptional collaboration and value-driven approach to a complex conservation project.
The judges noted, “This team has set a benchmark in conservation through individual excellence and impressive teamwork.”
Philip Carter recognised for 40+ years of dedication
Philip Carter, director of Carter Group, was honoured with the Property Council Long Service Award for his enduring commitment to Christchurch’s development, particularly post-quakes.
“Philip was one of a few local developers who remained loyal to the city when others left after the quakes. His vision and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the Christchurch we see today,” said the judges.
Young Achiever of the Year: Tom Barclay of PwC
PwC’s rising star, Tom Barclay, was named Greenwood Roche Young Achiever of the Year. The judges lauded him as a future leader, highlighting his relationship-building skills, leadership ambition, and consistent delivery.
“Tom’s drive for excellence made him a standout candidate for this award.”
Urban Design Award goes to Ō3 Collective for Dunedin’s George Street
The Urban Design Award was presented to the Ō3 Collective for their work on the George Street Retail Quarter in Dunedin. The project, completed by Jasmax, AECOM, and Isaac Construction, was recognised for revitalising the city’s main street and delivering a people-centric, high-value destination.
“The team’s respectful collaboration with mana whenua has given the street a distinctive, place-based identity that sets it apart as a high-value destination for locals and visitors alike,” said the judging panel.
Sustainability Excellence: Waimarie Science Facility Project Team
The Preformance Building Technology Excellence in Sustainability Award went to the Waimarie Science Facility Project Team at Lincoln University. The team’s work on the 9,500m² facility was commended for its decarbonisation commitment and outstanding collaboration with iwi.
“Their dedication to documenting the sustainability journey and their attention to the human impact of the design is truly impressive,” the judges commented.
Judges’ Choice Award joint winners: Dunedin Railway Station and Te Rangihīroa Project Teams
Finally, the Anderson Lloyd Judges’ Choice Award was shared by two standout teams: the Dunedin Railway Station Project Team and the University of Otago Te Rangihīroa Team. Both teams were celebrated for overcoming significant challenges to deliver impactful projects for the Otago region.
Leonie Freeman, chief executive of Property Council New Zealand, summed up the night’s achievements:
