Be informed of the latest updates in insurance as a panel of property and insurance professionals discuss the rising costs of insurance in the property sector.  John Lucas from the Insurance Council New Zealand will discuss the challenges from their perspectives of the global insurance market and why the costs of insurance is rising. Local Property owner, Paul Robinson will share with you the actions and findings he has taken to manage his insurance portfolio and David Middleton, insurance specialist will follow with supporting advice and financial aspects of disaster recovery.

Speakers

 

Paul Robinson, The Woolstore

Paul Robinson studied law at VUW in the 1970’s. He has worked in Wellington since 1981 in a variety of public and private sector management roles. In the 1990’s he and his brother and two sisters formed the Woolstore Group. The Group owns a mix of commercial, office and industrial properties around Wellington. Paul is particularly interested in how the environmental and social utility of these types of assets can be optimised.

 

 

David Middleton, Kestrel Group

David joined Kestrel Group in 2010 after stepping down after 17 years as Chief Executive of the Earthquake Commission (EQC). This role followed a 20-year involvement with the New Zealand insurance industry. His areas of specialisation are insurance and reinsurance, disaster recovery planning and the financial aspects of disaster recovery, public policy and research administration. David also has a wide knowledge of the natural disaster schemes implemented in other countries.

 

David is currently the Chair of the Strategic Advisory Group of the Natural Hazards Research Platform and Chair of the steering committee for the University of Canterbury-led Resilient Organisations research programme. He has received an Honorary Fellowship of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), Honorary Membership of the Wellington Lifelines Group and Lifetime Membership of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering. In 2010 David became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

 

 

Helen Smith, Simpson Grierson

Helen is a partner in the firm’s commercial litigation group, based in the Christchurch office. She is an insurance specialist, having acted for insurers and insureds for over 20 years. Her practice has a liability focus.
Helen also acts extensively on disciplinary matters for construction professionals, health professionals (particularly psychologists and social workers), real estate agents, lawyers and accountants. Helen also acts on statutory liability claims and has experience in public liability. She has also developed a niche for product liability claims, where swift action and close liaison between insurers, insureds, experts and consultants is required.
Helen’s experience extends to general liability, having acted for a number of insurers in fire and general claims. Helen’s experience means she is regularly called upon to provide expert comment on insurance and liability issues. She is also sought out to provide indemnity advice across PI, home, contents, vehicle, travel and life insurance policies.

 

 

John Lucas, Insurance Council New Zealand 

John Lucas joined ICNZ in 1996 as Insurance Manager. He is responsible for facilitating a number of technical working committees. He takes a leading role in coordinating the insurance industry's response to emergency events.

John began his insurance career with NZI in the early eighties, specialising in farm insurance and commercial property underwriting. He then moved to the UK where he worked for a number of broker firms before specialising in insolvency insurance placement in the London and Sydney insurance markets.

John is a Senior Associate of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.
