Being New Zealand’s second largest city, Christchurch is a crucial element to the economic growth in Canterbury and the wider South Island. The local property industry has overcome enormous challenges thrust upon it by the earthquakes and the Property Council has been instrumental throughout, providing advocacy and policy guidance.
An important phase of the earthquake recovery is upon us, as thousands of displaced office workers relocate back into the CBD of Christchurch and the central city residential development gains pace. The often-talked-about opportunities that would arise, particularly in tourism, hospitality and retail are now fast becoming a reality and this continues to drive the economy. We are on the cusp of the major Crown anchor projects getting underway and this will only add to the momentum already created and stimulate further investment.
The Branch will continue to be a crucial component of these growth opportunities, working collaboratively with Central and Local Government and Crown agencies to ensure there is clear alignment between all parties. Advocating for policies that promote development and ensure that Christchurch will continue on its path to be a new and vibrant city, serving its purpose as the gateway to the South Island.
We invite all members of the South Island property industry to join us and be a part of this exciting chapter of Christchurch’s development. Together, we can ensure success, further development and investment in the South Island economy.

South Island Education Trust
The South Island Education Trust was established in 2005 by Property Council to promote and support the education of students studying property, and to people employed in the industry.
In 2010, the Education Trust commissioned Lincoln University Commerce Faculty's Property Group to prepare the Christchurch Central Business District Survey of Retailers. This survey renewed debate on central city revitalisation, and highlighted the potential for more detailed research to be carried out.
Last year the Trust committed to supporting a student's Masters thesis at the University of Canterbury and has since re-launched its fundraising efforts to ensure the longevity of the fund.
