New Ministry desirable but no silver bullet

MEDIA RELEASE

Property Council New Zealand says this morning’s announcement by Housing Minister Hon Phil Twyford of a Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is no silver bullet for the housing crisis.

“Our members face many delays through the consenting process. While this morning's announcement is essentially a bureaucratic reshuffle, we're pleased the new Ministry will have a specific focus to help the sector build more houses more quickly. Hopefully this means we can reduce unnecessary delays,” says Property Council CEO Connal Townsend.

“Our hope is that this Ministry will reduce the current piece-meal approach undertaken by sucessive Governments and look at the big picture."

"We recommend lining up the Local Government review associated with development contributions with the Productivity Commission’s inquiry into alternative local government funding options.”

"While National's Housing Spokesperson Judith Collins is consistently saying changes to the Resource Management Act are needed, that is only one part of it. The industry recognises a much wider approach is necessary. It's the entire planning process that needs an overhaul."

“Our members are here to build communities, not just houses. We are happy to work with the Government to achieve these goals.”
