CHEWS LANE PRECINCT - THE BEST OF THE BEST
Wellington's Chews Lane Precinct has been crowned the Supreme Award winner at the Property Council New Zealand Rider Levett Bucknall Property Award's for 2009.
Taking out two other major awards, Mixed Use Property and Urban Design, the Chews Lane Precinct is a significant mixed use development, creating an exciting new destination in the heart of the Wellington CBD.
Originally the site of a timber yard back in the 1870s, and owned by "Wellington's Father of Industry" Mr John Chew, Mr Chew designed and opened buildings on his Willis Street site, which would later become Chews Lane. In 2009 it seems only fitting that an equally passionate team of people should be awarded the Supreme title for their rework of a piece of New Zealand's history.
The developers, Willis Bond & Co, responded to the brief prepared by the Wellington City Council to deliver a new mixed-use development in the city incorporating commercial offices, retails stores, food and beverage outlets and car parking, with residential apartments being incorporated as part of a later stage.
The result is a blended development delivering 19 retail stores, 15,000 square metres of office space and 197 car parks.
Clinton Bird, convenor of the judging panel for the Urban Design Award, explained that "Construction of the project took place in a functionally and spatially tight and challenging urban environment, with very restricted access off Victoria Street. Heritage buildings have been imaginatively restored and retrofitted, and thoroughly contemporary new buildings seamlessly integrated into the overall ensemble".
The development has achieved a clever blend of old and new structures, and comprises a number of new and refurbished buildings centred around Chews Lane.
"We were impressed with the total scope of the project, the attention to detail, the commitment to the concept of incorporating old with new and delivering premium quality accommodation in a revitalised environment," said Chief Judge, John Dunn.
"The project is considered internationally competitive in all judging criteria and deemed a deserving winner of the Supreme Award for 2009".
